Turkey experiences or tips? [October 31, 2009] travel_advisory [houshin_m] Hey everyone, I'm an university student who is thinking of studying abroad in Turkey for next year's Fall semester. My school has two programs, both in Istanbul - one at Koc University and another at Boğaziçi University. The Koc one is with CIEE, the Bogazici one is with my school's direct partnership.  I was just wondering if anyone has lived in Istanbul or even better, studied abroad there, and could give me some general, non-touristy impressions of what life there's like. (I'm a guy if that makes a difference.) I'm currently deciding which country to choose for study abroad, and my other main choice is Geneva, Switzerland (I've been taking French classes for so long!), but my friends all keep pressuring me to choose Turkey - although at my school, most people study abroad and the less.....typical or out-of-the-ordinary your study abroad experience is, the more props you're likely to get haha. Of course I'm mainly interested in going because of the unique mix and bridge Turkey is between the East and West. Thanks for the advice everyone. 2

[October 29, 2009] canadabound [sabatoa] Hey all. I just joined this community and have been reading through the posts and I decided that maybe a curiosity that I had could be answered. I'm a U.S. citizen. Earlier this month I flew into Calgary for a five day visit. It was my third visit since June to Calgary from the States with a dash of driving to Windsor, ON thrown in there somewhere. I digress. This time in October though instead of ushering me through per usual, the customs agent referred me to Immigration where I was heavily questioned about why I was there, who I knew and how much $$ I had, did I have a return flight booked (and proof was required) in addition to other personal questions. He then wrote in my passport that I could stay for 7 days (giving me two extra days in case I had airline problems). He wrote in my passport the end date and then finally sent me on to get my baggage checked before letting me past to meet the person picking me up. Does anyone know why they would send me to Immigration if I was only a visitor? I JUST read somewhere that you can visit Canada for up to 6 months without having to file extra paperwork...if that's the case then does anyone have a guess on why he specifically wrote an end-date of 7 days in my passport? 30

[October 28, 2009] travel_advisory [ninaner] Yesterday I booked a vacation package to Hawaii with Priceline because of the great deal available. I spent the entire time reading reviews for hotels/condos and totally forgot to read the reviews for the airline I was assigned which turns out to be Northwest/Delta which I have never traveled. I did the research tonight and found out that they are TERRIBLE and are known for their delays or cancellations. Does anyone have experience with flying through Priceline? If your flight gets delayed and you miss your connecting flight, does Priceline help you out with getting a new flight or do you have to deal directly with the airline when you're there? I've never this happen or have a flight cancel so I don't know how to handle it if it did. Even though my vacation isn't for about 2 months, I'm all of a sudden very nervous about missing time in Hawaii b/c we're only there for 6 days and wanted to see if I could take any preventative steps or at least get information as what to do if it were to occur.
